According to a recent study, there has been an increase of nearly 8 percent of the number of deer related auto accidents in the U.S. over the last year. This comes as a surprise since the past three years there was a period where deer related collisions dropped by 2 percent.

November is the month when the most accidents occur involving deer. There is data that shows about 1 in 5 automobile accidents take place during the month of November with October and December following in its footsteps.

Why are accidents so prevalent during this time? This is the time when deer are mating. Not only that, but the colder weather is setting in possibly making roads icy and more dangerous to drive on.

Where are deer accidents most likely? West Virginia tops the list of states for deer-driver confrontations for the fifth year in a row. It is estimated the possibility of striking a deer in West Virginia over a 12 months period is about 1 in 40. So if you live in or are traveling through this state, make sure you are cautious while driving!  In New York the possibility of hitting a deer is 1 in 141 .  Click here for a map of the liklihood of striking a deer in various states.

How much does a deer-related accident cost? The Insurance Information Institute estimates there are 1.6 million automobile collisions with deer annually that result in 200 human deaths, tens of thousands of injuries, $3.6 billion in vehicle damage and $1 billion in medical expenses filed with insurance companies.  Seely & Durland clients have car damage estimates ranging from $1,500-$5,000!  To minimize damages try to keep your car on the road.  By swerving to avoid a deer, you risk more serious damage from oncoming vehicles or driving into a tree or telephone pole or into a ditch. Or worse, personal injury to you and/or passengers.
