Garrett Durland, CIC, CPIA (right), Co-Owner and President of Seely & Durland, joined his father, Ken, at the agency in 1980 before taking over in 1997. Specializing in commercial property and casualty insurance and focused on the agency’s larger business clients, Garrett is also very much immersed in the day-to-day operations.
Keeping with his grandfather’s original vision and legacy, Garrett has dedicated the last 30-plus years to the community, serving in leadership roles and on boards of several not-for-profits organizations. For the Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce, he served as president twice and treasurer once, while maintaining a strong presence as a director on the board for the past 20 years. He has been an active board member of the Warwick Soccer Club, and coached recreation and travel soccer for over 15 years.
Garrett lives and works by the philosophy that education, professionalism, and trust are the keys to building successful, long-term relationships with clients. Garrett resides in Warwick with his wife, Rachel; they have two grown sons, Benjamin and Lucas.
In his words: Favorite part of SDI? “The people! The legacy of being part of a 4th generation, family-owned firm, and finding such a great team to be a part of the family!”
Stuart Durland, AAI, AINS, CPIA (left), Co-Owner and Vice President of Operations, is Garrett’s older brother and Ken’s oldest son. In 1990, Stu left Travelers Insurance Company to join the firm, focusing on marketing, operations, and technology, allowing Garrett to concentrate on sales. From 1990 to 1997, the agency more than doubled its revenue. In January, 1997, after 39 years, Ken retired and sold the business to his sons.
Stuart has held many national level automation and technology leadership positions, including with the Agents Council for Technology (ACT) and the Association Users Group Information Exchange (AUGIE). He is a past president of the Applied Systems Client Net, a national users group with over 4000 members, and currently co-chairs the Insurance Digital Revolutions (IDR). He has also been recognized several times for his contributions to the industry. Stuart is a past treasurer of the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America (IIABA) of Orange County and a past president and current member of the Warwick Lions Club. He is also the current treasurer of the Warwick Cemetery and a past president of the Warwick Valley Country Club. Stuart resides in Warwick with his wife, Cal; they have three grown sons, Brian, Eric, and Justin.
